I haven’t had any problems with them opening in the earrings, even after my kiddos play with them. Are you opening the jump rings properly? You should be twisting them open so that the ends are parallel to each other, not prying the ends apart. That will allow you to close them fully.

If it were a stronger/thicker gauge, I think it would work better.
