Conversation Heart Hoop Art

If it is possible to have Valentine’s Day without Conversation Heart Candies, I don’t want to know about it. Since I was young, these chalky, flavorless sweets with their kitschy phrases are quintessential Valentine’s treats. When I was younger, I loved eating them. Now I marvel at them, and love creating Conversation Heart Crafts, like this Conversation Heart Hoop Art. If you love Conversation Hearts, you might also want to check out my Conversation Heart Earrings.

Conversation Heart Hoop Art

This project is part of Craft Lightning Week. All week long I’m sharing a fast, 15 minute craft you can make for Valentine’s Day. And I’m not alone! My Friend Angie from The Country Chic Cottage is co-hosting with me again, and we got Laura from Make Life Lovely to join us as our guest co-host this week! Check out their projects, and the projects from lots of our other friends down at the bottom of this page.

To stitch up your own conversation heart hoop art, you’ll need:

Small wooden hoops
Colored cotton fabrics
Red Embroidery Floss
Scissors
Water Soluble Marker
Water & Paintbrush

supplies for hoop art

I’ll be detailing the steps below, but you can also watch this quick video that will take you through the steps of making your Conversation Heart Hoop Art.

Start by cutting a piece of fabric a little larger than your hoop, and then hooping your fabric.

hoop fabric

Write on the text using the water soluble marker.

Cut a length of embroidery floss about as long as your arm. Split it so that you’re only using three threads.

split thread

Thread your needle, and start stitching!

stitch text

After stitching, trim away the excess fabric around the hoop. If you like, add glue to the edge of the fabric where it meets the hoop. This will make it more durable.

trim away fabric

Use a paintbrush and water to wash away the blue lines.

water on hoop

Wait for the water to dry (or use a hair dryer if you’re impatient). While you’re waiting, stitch up another one!

Valentine's Chocolate - Made from On Sale Christmas Chocolate!

To make this Valentine’s Chocolate, you’ll need:

Double-Sided Tape

supplies

Cut out the printed shape.

Remove the paper wrapper from the chocolate (leave on the foil). Then wrap in the new paper.

fold around chocolate

Tape flap down with double-sided tape. Your Christmas chocolate has been converted to Valentine’s Chocolate!

I made it a two dollar bill because Valentine’s Day isn’t about big sums of money – it is about two people getting together. Which is also why I left the center of the wrapper blank. You can add a picture of you and your sweetie, write in your names, or do anything you like to make this chocolate bar extra special for the two of you.

Heart and Rocket Valentine Tee

With Valentine’s Day coming up – all the hearts and flowers – I was looking for something cute for my boys to wear. As a boy mom, I’m always looking for fun ideas that they get excited about. Hearts are fine… but hearts with a rocket? Yes, mom! This, of course, could be a great shirt for a girl, of any age… matchy-matchy mom and son shirts, anyone?

Heart and Rocket Valentine's Tee

Supplies:
Vinyl (or Freezer paper, whatever you have handy)
Red fabric paint (This is Plaid’s new Fabric Ink)
Heart and Rocket Silhouette cut file
Foam Paintbrush
Paper or cardboard

supplies for shirt

Cut the stencil with your Silhouette machine. Tuck a piece of paper or cardboard into the shirt, then apply the vinyl. If you’re using freezer paper instead, iron it in place (shiny side down).

put vinyl on shirt

Use the sponge applicator to apply the fabric ink. It is very thin (which is awesome because it dries fast!), go with lots of thin layers instead of a big gloppy mess, so the ink doesn’t bleed under the stencil. Bleeding hearts is not what we’re going for with this shirt.

apply fabric ink

Apply all the way down.

fill in with fabric ink

Peel back the vinyl stencil, and just wait for it to dry!

peel away vinyl

This one was dry in about 20 minutes. When it is (mostly) dry, you can put a piece of plain paper over the top, and run an iron over it. This will help it dry faster, and also heat-set the ink.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Table Setting

Valentine’s is my favorite. It isn’t nearly as high-stress as Christmas, and there are so many fun ways you can decorate. Sure, it is easy to grab the roses, the red, and pinks… but you can make a simple table setting using black and white as well, and it is just as beautiful as one decked out with rose petals!

Black and white Valentine's Day table setting - a classy and romantic option!

You’ll need:

White China
Wine Glass (and water glass if you like)
Small and large doily
Black and white Valentine’s ribbon
Black cloth napkin
Heart-shaped glass ornament
Permanent marker

supplies for table setting

Use the permanent marker to write a name or sentiment on the ornament.

write on ornament

Fold the napkin into quarters. Roll two opposite corners in towards the center. Wrap with the small doily.

wrap napkin

Tie in place with ribbon. Double-knot.

tie in place

Slip the ornament on one end of the ribbon. Stack the large plate, the doily, and the napkin.

black and white setting

Now make something delicious to eat… or just order in!

Valentine’s Door Hanger

Surprise a friend or family member this Valentine’s Day with a Valentine’s gift on their doorknob! This is a great way to surprise your kids on Valentine’s morning with a sweet surprise waiting on their doorknob. This door hanger box is simple to make, just cut it out and glue together, and you’re ready to go in about 5 minutes!

Valentine's Day Door Hanger - Easy to make, then hang on the door and fill with treats!

You’ll need:
Scrapbooking Cardstock
Silhouette Machine and door hanger silhouette file
Hot Glue
Tissue Paper
Treats to tuck inside

supplies for door hanger

Cut out with your Silhouette machine.

cut on silhouette

Fold on dotted lines and glue flaps.

glue door hanger

Tuck treat in with tissue paper.

Hang on a doorknob, waiting for someone sweet!

Crystal Heart

This Crystal Heart is a fun Valentine’s Activity to do with kids. My boys and I made Crystal Snowflakes as part of our Snow Party over break, and they loved them! These crystal hearts are made using Borax, which you can find at your grocery store, and basic craft supplies. You’ll want to pour the hot water for them, but they can do most of the other steps themselves – and when they pull out their crystal hearts in the morning, they’ll be amazed!
