Upscale Flip Flops

Living in the desert, I live in flip flops for much of the year. They are comfortable, inexpensive, and super easy to embellish. I hadn’t seen anything like this fun idea for embellishing flip-flops before, though! This great DIY made me double-take, because these are some seriously upscale flip flops! The brass ring makes the flip flops look like much more than rubber and foam – they look like footwear that can take you from pool to party. They are also easy to make, and don’t take much time at all. It will take more time to dig up some brass rings to use than it will to make these fun summer shoes.

Simple Charm Earrings

Earrings can be super simple to make, if you get the right supplies. I love heading over to the beading section at the craft store, and just wandering down the aisle, admiring all of the pretty colors and shapes of beads. If my son isn’t with me, I spend some time touching them too (I can’t do that when he is there, because we’re learning to look and not touch)! If you combine some of these pretty beads with some earring wires and simple charms, you can make a custom pair of simple charm earrings that matches an outfit perfectly. These DIY Dragonfly Earrings would make a great gift as well. If you have a friend with a passion for something in particular – dragons, elephants, flowers, birds… just find a charm in that shape and add it with the bead instead of the dragonfly. There are also lots of sports charms available, you could make these simple charm earrings for the athletic gal in your life, using a soccer ball charm and her team colors.

Simple Skirt in 30 Minutes!

Do you ever have those days where you have no clue what to wear? All of your favorite things are in the wash, nothing in your closet matches, and everything is so… blah. You don’t have time to run to the store to buy something new, but you DO have time to run some fabric under the sewing machine and make yourself a brand new skirt in less time than it would take to pick something out at the store. You could spend an evening on the weekend whipping up a whole new wardrobe for the week with this super simple no-pattern skirt!

Craft with Junk Mail

Did you think it was possible to create something beautiful out of junk mail? Well, you absolutely can! You’ll no longer think of junk mail as the garbage you have to sift through to get to the bills and occasional birthday card or invitation… you’ll now think of junk mail as the craft supply that is lovingly placed in your mailbox each week! Ok… maybe not entirely lovingly… but you can take it out with excitement as you think of how to cut up, combine, and cut up again all the scraps and pieces!

Check out this great junk mail crafting tutorial to see how easy it is to make art out of junk!

Pom Pom Studded Balloons

This is one of the coolest party DIYs I’ve seen in a long time. And with two young boys, I’ve done a lot of research on different party ideas. Even written some party posts myself. I would never have thought to add pom poms to balloons. And you won’t believe how it is done. You’ll have to click over to the pom pom balloon tutorial to read exactly how it is done.

Rhinestone Button Hair Pins

Do you ever see cute hair pins and want to replicate them? Crystal hairpins can be expensive to buy… and they can be nearly as expensive to make because crystals can be pricey. Sure, you can use your 40% off coupon at the craft store to bring down the price… or you can substitute something equally bling-y. Buttons studded with rhinestones make a great substitute, as you can see in these Rhinestone Button Hair Pins. And, if you scroll down to the bottom of the post you’ll find a list of places where you can purchase similar buttons to make your own hair bling.

3D Minion Goggles

Free Printable to make Minion Goggles out of 3D glasses

Take your movie theater 3D Glasses and turn them into 3D Minion Goggles with this free printable! (Update: some people had trouble accessing the template on Google. I’ve also uploaded it to Box.com. You can find it here.) I’ve made 2 to a sheet so that you can print two covers at a time – print them up, cut them out, and tape or glue them together. Make sure that you take some tape with you to the movie theater to see Despicable Me 2 so that you can attach your 3D Minion Goggles!

We wore our Minion Goggle 3D glasses when we went to see Despicable Me 2. My husband, 4-year-old son and were among the first to see the movie, and we all loved it. We are big fans of Despicable Me around here. My son calls it the “Minion Movie”. And there are plenty of Minion antics in this sequel. Perhaps too many for me. In Despicable Me, many of the antics were of the sweet, toilet-brush-turned-unicorn variety. In this movie, the antics were more along the lines of space-ship-knocked-over variety. Which are funny for kids to watch, but things that moms don’t want their children to mimic. Despite a few of these moments, we really did love seeing the movie. I enjoyed seeing Gru grow as a character, and as a dad.  And Dave and Steve and the rest of the Minions really are charming… in their own well-meaning way.

Here are my boys in their Minion Goggle 3D Glasses at the theater, getting ready to watch the show. They are also wearing  Gru-logo t-shirts (the logo on my hubs’ shirt is a little hard to see in this lighting), I’ll share that with you at the end of this post.

Wearing Minion Glasses

Start by printing the 3D Glasses cover. You can find it here. Each page prints 2 covers.

Cut out around the shapes, and cut out the center black holes. Cut slits along the straight lines on each side of the glasses, each slit about 1/4″ apart, up to the dark grey straight line.

Fold the tabs you just cut in on the dark grey line. Turn the sheet over, and attach the tabs to the back using a glue stick or double-stick tape.

Follow the curve of the glasses as you attach the tabs.

If, like me, you grabbed glasses from when you went to see Monsters University, you can now put double stick tape on the front of the glasses. If not, bring the tape with you to the theater.

Line up the holes in the goggles with the lenses on the glasses, and attach the goggles to the front of the 3D glasses.

And just like that, you’ve turned your plain 3D glasses into Minion Goggles perfect for watching Despicable Me 2!

3D Glasses turned Minion Goggles

You can take them off while watching the movie, if you like. My son and husband did. I kept mine on during the movie, and was able to see everything just fine.

Of course, I had to make t-shirts to wear to the movie. Since I made a Mike Wazowski t-shirt for my son to wear to Monsters University, and now a shirt to wear to Despicable Me 2, I’m sure my son will be expecting a custom shirt every time we go to the movies. And I might have to oblige since they are so fun to make! For this shirt, I used a Freezer Paper stencil.

I looked up the logo and printed it on a sheet of paper. I put freezer paper over it, and traced it out. It is important to have the shiny side of the freezer paper down.

trace logo to freezer paper

I cut out the logo and ironed it onto the shirt, shiny side down. The shiny side of the freezer paper has a plastic-y coating. This plastic melts just slightly under the heat of the iron. This temporarily fuses the stencil in place. I added a layer of freezer paper to the inside of the shirt as well, to protect the paint from soaking through the front and into the back.

Using fabric paint, I filled in the design.

While the paint is still wet, I carefully peeled up the freezer paper, and let the shirt dry. It was that easy!

Wire Wrap Ring in 10 Minutes

I’m such a fan of quick jewelry. Maybe it is because I don’t lay out my clothes the night before. So I’m usually taking a shower, trying to remember what clothes are clean (and if they are in the dryer or if they made it into the closet yet). And while I’m sudsing up my hair, I realize that I know the perfect jewelry to go with my outfit. But… I need to make it first. Which is fine because I like to make quick jewelry, and my jewelry supplies are always handy. This wire wrapped ring is super simple and fast to make … just follow the steps to whip one up faster than it takes to dry your hair!
