Mod Melts Paperclips

This post was sponsored by Plaid.

Mod Melts Paperclip

Have y’all heard of Mod Melts yet? It a way that you can make your own embellishments. You use a Mod Melts mold, and Mod Melts sticks in your regular high-temp glue gun, and you can whip up embellishments to use on hairbows, gifts, cards, scrapbook layouts, home decor… lots of stuff. I even made some butterfly decor!

Plaid sent me some fun stuff to play with – Mod Melts sticks in Beach Glass Clear, Folk Art paints, a spouncer, and of course a Mod Melts mold. There are several mold options available.

To the supplies they sent, I added: Paperclips. Yup, just regular ol’ paperclips from the office supply store!

I got started. It is very easy. I loaded the Mod Melts into my high temp glue gun, let it heat up, and then squirted the Mod melts into the mold.

put melts into mold

I put one end of the paperclip down on top of the mold, and then added a little more Mod Melt on top.

Then I waited 10 minutes, and popped out the Mod Melt. I gave the nest a base coat of cream, and painted the eggs white. I wanted the detail to show, so I dipped my brush into a little bit of brown paint, wiped off most of it, and then dry brushed over the nest.

It was that easy to spruce up plain, boring paper clips with Mod Melts !

Fast and Easy Watermelon Plates

decoart paintFor these plates, you just need a few supplies:
DecoArt Glass Paint
Paint sponges
Plain sponges
4 Glass plates

Start by cutting a sponge into a teardrop shape.

cut sponge for seeds

Use this sponge to make watermelon seed shapes on the back of the plates. All the paint will be applied to the back of the plates, so that it never comes into contact with the food-side of the plate. Use a thin coat, and go one at a time. By the time you finish the 4th plate, the first one will already be starting to dry.

stamp on seeds

Use the paint sponge to add green glass paint to the rim of each paint. Move quickly. The sponge will make the plate look a frosted green color.

paint red into watermelon

Once you add the green to all four plates, the seeds will be dry on the first plate. Apply the red paint to the centers with the paint sponge. It will give a great uneven-ish look, like a nice juicy watermelon! YUM!

watermelon plates painted

Allow the plates to dry for 3 days, and then bake in the oven as directed to set the paint. Your watermelon plates will be dishwasher safe and ready for you to use all summer long! Make up a set of my watermelon coasters to go with them, if you like!

Candy Fireworks with American Crafts

This post is sponsored by American Crafts .

Candy Fireworks

A huge THANK YOU to American Crafts for sending me a fun box of glittery goodness to play with! One of the best parts of what I do is getting boxes in the mail, and then getting to come up with fun ideas of what to do with them! I had a blast (pun intended, thanks for noticing!) making these Candy Fireworks with the glitter cardstock and glitter tape from American Crafts. Want to make your own sweet and fire-free 4th of July decor? I’ll show you how!

American Crafts Supplies

Here is what they sent. I used the different glitter cardstocks, the double-stick tape, the glitter tape, and the glitter Thickers (awesome super-thick sticker letters). I’ll save the loose glitter for another time. To this, I added some curling ribbon, scissors, hot glue, and CANDY! Because, you know, they’re candy fireworks.

pick round candies

I originally went to the store looking for Lifesaver rolled candies, but couldn’t find them. I got a variety of different rolled and tube candies instead. They all worked great, and I loved the variety that the different thicknesses and lengths brought to the project. Hint: buy extra. Not all of my candies made it to the craft table… haha!

The process was simple. I cut the cardstock the length of the candy, and rolled the candy over the cardstock to determine the width.

cut paper to size for candy

Cardstock is a little heavier than paper, so I curled it around a pen to get the curve going. You could curl it around a dowel or a paper straw. The idea is to get a nice looking curve without creasing the paper.

roll paper with a pen

I unrolled the paper, and used the double-stick tape on three sides to attach the cardstock to the candy.

tape up candy

Then I decorated with the glitter tape. This part was fun! I just added strips of tape in whatever pattern felt right. The glitter tape is super sticky, but getting any adhesive to stick to glitter is tough, so I helped out by adding a dab of hot glue at the ends. That kept the tape super secure.

The tape is awesome stuff, by the way – so easy to add glitter accents!

wrap with glitter tape

If I left them like this, they’d end up just being “candy spirit sticks” which is fine, but I wanted FIREWORKS. I cut 5 pieces of ribbon, each about 8″ long, and tied one end with an overhand knot. I curled the ribbon, and then glued the knot to one end of my candy firework.

before and after rollo becomes a candy firework

I used the Thickers to add {POW} to my glass container, just for a little more fun!

Candy Fireworks for the 4th of July

I guarantee that these candies won’t last until Independence Day! I’m sure I’ll be whipping up some more before the 4th of July!

School Backpack turned Summer Pack: Summer Cook & Craft

Cook and Craft - Backpack and Granoloa bars

Looking for some fun, easy projects to do with the kids this summer? If the lazy days of summer have already turned long and boring with too much time spent in front of the TV, I’ve got you covered! I’ve partnered with my friend Brandie from Home Cooking Memories to bring you a “Summer Cook & Craft” series for the next 4 weeks. Each week, we’ll share with you a simple treat and a quick craft you can do with your kids.

This week, I want to share with you how to turn that ratty school backpack into a summer pack. If you’re going to go to museums, parks, pools, and playdates this summer, your kids will need something to carry their towels, suits, toys, electronic devices, snacks, and whatever else. Because otherwise you’ll be carrying all that stuff. Which is never good.

Brandie is sharing these yummy Peanut Butter Coconut Granola Bars. Yum-o! Have you ever made homemade granola bars? You’ll have to go check out her recipe. These are perfect for summer… toss them in a baggie, throw them in the backpack, and you’ve got a great summer snack that won’t melt in the heat, doesn’t need refrigeration, and is super yummy!

supplies for robot backpack

So take their school bag and let them have at it. I grabbed my son’s plain school bag and some paint pens. You could use puff paint, decorative Duck Tape (which you might need if the backpack has seen significant wear this school year), fabric paints (there are some awesome fabric spray paints out that would work well)… whatever you have on hand or happens to hop into your basket at the craft store. If your kids love to sew, let them sew patches of fabric on… whatever they want – this is their summer bag.

I used my phone to look up pictures of robots for this bag. Coming up with a robot image on my own is tough, but I can freehand a decent copy of an image if it is put in front of me. Feel free to look up inspiration images of your own.

draw on backpack

I added gears, nuts, whatever parts I thought would be fun.

Break out of the summer rut by making a fun project out of your boring old school bag!

This ring REALLY makes a statement. I kinda love it. You can make one yourself in 30 minutes. And if the flames are a little too much for you, you can always “give them a haircut”.  Everyone will be asking where you got your flame statement ring. And nobody will believe what you use to make them!
