Paper Christmas Trees

These little paper Christmas Tree decorations take only a couple minutes to make, and are an insanely easy (and inexpensive) way to add a festive touch to any space. Perfect for school, church, or scouting events where you want to add a touch of the holiday spirit on a budget!

Modern 3D Paper Tree

To make your tree, you’ll need green scrapbook paper, and the right printable or cut file for cutting.

To hand cut, use this printable.
To cut with your Silhouette, use this Silhouette cut file.
And you’ll need hot glue.

supplies for modern tree

These trees were actually inspired by this photo from this month’s Family Circle Magazine. See those trees up on the top shelf? Yes, they look nothing like these – but that’s where this idea came from!

Slip the top piece into the bottom piece using the top and bottom notches. Lay flat. Run a line of hot glue down the crease from top to bottom.

glue down line

Quickly, before the glue cools, open up the two layers so they are at a right angle. If needed, add another line of hot glue along one of the other seams to help secure.

Magic Treehouse Craft

I grew up loving to read and to craft. Getting to pass these two passions on to my sons is one of my greatest joys as a mom. That’s why, when Barnes & Noble gave me a gift card to shop in their store, I headed immediately for the kids’ books. My oldest is 7, and recently started getting excited about “Chapter Books”. He doesn’t love to read, but he has gotten very excited about the “Magic Treehouse” series. I’ve had the chance to read several of these books with him, and I love the way the stories weave together imagination, history, and mystery into a story my son loves – while helping him build his vocabulary! I love bringing fiction to life, so I thought I’d make this 3D paper version of the Magic Treehouse.

DIY Magic Treehouse Craft - 3D Paper Magic Treehouse Model

To make your own 3D Magic Treehouse out of paper, you’ll need:
Cardstock in Dark Brown, Light Brown, and Green
Brown Colored Pencil, Marker, or Crayon
Glue – I like a hot glue gun
Magic Treehouse Files:
To cut out by hand: Tree trunk top, Tree trunk bottom, Treehouse, Leaves
To cut by Silhouette: Tree trunk top, Tree trunk bottom, Treehouse, Leaves

supplies for magic treehouse craft

The Silhouette files are designed to cut on 12×12 paper. The pdf files are designed to be printed on 8.5×11″ paper. So, your tree will be smaller if you use the pdf files – but you can scale either version of the files to make it whatever size you like.

Cut out all the pieces on the various colors of paper. Fold the treehouse on the score lines, then draw in the woodgrain. I pressed hard on the outlines of the wood, and lighter to add in some woodgrain detail.

draw in wood detail

Do this on all the sections except the bottom.

draw in all the wood details

Glue the house together by adding glue to the flaps, and folding together.

glue flaps

Slip the top and bottom trunk pieces together using the slits at the top and bottom. Glue on the sides to secure.

glue trunk together

Use hot glue to secure the bottom of the treehouse to the center of the tree.

glue-treehouse-together

Slip the leaf pieces on using the slits. Add as few or as many as you like. The leaf pieces are all different – this keeps the tree from looking too symmetrical.

slip on leaves

Your Magic Treehouse model is complete! If you like, you can use toothpicks and embroidery floss to make a rope ladder, but that will take this project beyond 30 minutes.

finished magic treehouse

You can make mini paper books representing each of the books that Jack and Annie, the characters in the Magic Treehouse, use each time they go on one of their time-travel adventures. Each time you read one of the books in the series, draw what that book might look like – dinosaurs, castles, egypt, and more. And don’t forget a book that will take you back to Frog Creek, Pennsylvania!

How to Gift a Cookie

This year, I made plates full of cookies for as teacher and neighbor gifts. But I wanted a few smaller cookie gifts to give to other special people who maybe didn’t need a whole plate of cookies. These wrapped cookies are great for the librarian, friends at school, or other people that you’d like to gift something a little more substantial than just a card.

I was given the cute tag, twine, and bag kit from The Baker’s Party Shop, where they have all kinds of cute baking supplies, and supplies for wrapping up your baked goods! For any holiday, or a birthday party, you’ll find tons of sprinkles, containers, boxes, tags, and more. I suggest having a couple of their kits on hand for when you need to wrap up a quick treat!

I just tucked the cookie into the bag, tied the twine, added our name, and tied the tag on the end of the twine. Cute, functional, and done!

Mini House Boxes

If I had to pick one favorite thing about Christmas, it might be Gingerbread houses. Or presents. But Gingerbread houses as presents – that is the best! These little Gingerbread house boxes are simple to make, and fun for the kids to decorate – without all the calories (unless you tuck chocolate inside – that is up to you)!

Print out or cut out these boxes on your silhouette, decorate with a white marker, and use to give little candies or other gifts!

Supplies:
Brown Paper
House Printable or Silhouette cut file
Scissors or Sihouette
White paint pen or white crayon
Hot Glue
Ribbon

Cut out the house shape.

Elf Stamped Gift Boxes

Our elf, Ginger, doesn’t roast mini marshmallows on a toothpick over a candle with GI Joe and barbie. She doesn’t make snow angel shapes in flour on our kitchen table. She doesn’t poop peppermints in the toilet. She just sits quietly, collecting data for Santa, that she brings up to the North Pole each night before coming home and finding a new spot to hide. And sometimes, she brings a little gift. A movie, an ornament, a few chocolates… nothing big. Just a little treat from the North Pole as an encouraging reminder to do your best.

This year, her gifts are stamped with her personalized seal of approval! Expressionery sent me this great stamp that has Ginger’s name on it – how cool is that! And every elf can get their own customized stamp as well!

I whipped up some boxes for Ginger, so that she can give a couple gifts this year. They go together very quickly! If you want an even smaller box, this stamp would also fit perfectly on my mini gift boxes.

You’ll need:
Scrapbook paper
Silhouette cut file or printable page
Silhouette machine or scissors
Glue (I prefer hot glue)

Snowman Building Kit

Whenever I think of snowmen, I think of Olaf, and of the song from the Movie Frozen – “Do you want to build a Snowman?” … how fun it is to head to the snow and build a snowman! But, we live in a climate where we are unlikely to build a snowman. Lots of sandcastles, no snowmen. It is a tradeoff we’re happy with… most of the time. But when that winter snowman-building urge strikes, it is good to know that we can get crafty and build a snowman! If you’d like to give the gift of snowmen this year, you too can gift this fun and simple snowman building kit!

It was so simple to make – just a few supplies in a box, and a printable on the labels sent to me by Online Labels.

DIY Snowman Kit - no matter what climate you live in, you can give the gift of snowmen this winter!
