How to Make Lots of Pom Poms

I love making pom poms – they are such a versatile craft supply, and fun to make as well! I have a couple different pom pom makers, that are awesome for whipping out a perfect pom pom. But sometimes, I don’t want just one pom pom. I want oodles of pom poms. Making lots of pom poms is super easy – and you don’t need any special tools at all!

To make these pom poms, you’ll want a skein of yarn. This yarn was dyed using the Tulip Yarn Dye kit. You’ll also need scissors, tape, and a large cylinder of some sort – a big coffee can, a large tin can from a cafeteria, or a bucket all work great.

supplies to make lots of pom poms

Start by taping one end of the yarn to the side of the can/bucket.

tape yarn

Wind the yarn around, dividing the bucket into sections. From the top and bottom, it should look like pie slices.

segments-on-the-bucket segments-with-yarn

The smaller the segments, the smaller your finished pom poms will be. When you’re done, cut the yarn and tape off the other end.

Start winding the yarn around the circumference of the bucket, round and round and round. The more yarn, the fuller your pom poms will be. You’ll want to go around at least 75 times. More creates nice, full pom poms.

wind the yarn

wind yarn round and round

Cut the yarn at the top and bottom of the bucket.

cut strings

Tie each string. A tight double-knot is perfect. You want to tie these segments as snugly as possible.

tie strings

Cut the yarn that was wound, midway between each knot.

trim between knots

You will have some very sad looking pom poms. Don’t worry! You didn’t do it wrong!

cut pom poms

Fluff up your pom poms with your fingers, and trim any strings that are too long.

trim up pom poms

Now you have a whole bunch of pom poms to create with!

Besties Charm Bracelet

We all need to feel our friends close – with this project, you can carry your friends with you! Make this simple Besties Charm Bracelet to keep your friends on your wrist, wherever you go!

Make a besties charm bracelet

This bracelet was made using “Peeps” drawn by Laura Kelly for her “Me and My Peeps” collection. I recently went to a retreat at her house, and Expressionery had printed a notepad for each person at the retreat, with our own personal peep designed by Laura herself! I was able to grab a sheet of the personalized paper from many of the gals at the retreat to make this fun charm bracelet.

To make this charm bracelet I used:
Me and My Peeps Stationery from Expressionery
Little Windows Resin starter kit
Jewelry Pliers
Necklace Chain
Jump Rings
Jewelry Clasp
Pencil
Perler Bead trays

supplies for besties charm bracelet

Trace the peeps using the stencil provided in the kit. Cut out.

use stencil to make charms

Mix resin according to instructions. Allow to sit so you can do the “doming” technique, described in the kit.

Place the cut out pieces on the perler bead trays. Apply the resin for the doming technique. Allow to sit overnight.

resin on charms

Use the drill from the kit to drill a hole in the top of each.

Cut the chain for your wrist.

Use the jump rings to attach the charms.

put charms on bracelet

Space out the charms as you attach them. I count the number of chain loops between them to keep them evenly spaced. Once you have the charms on, attach the clasp.

Now you can bring your friends with you wherever you go with your Besties Charm Bracelet!

Snowy Tree Vignette

With all the Christmas crafting and wrapping, I found myself with lots of empty ribbon spools. I knew they’d be perfect for making a snowy vignette! I might make more to use as the centerpiece on our table, or just use as holiday decor. They are so fast and easy to make, I love this snowy tree decor!

Alvin & The Chipmunks: Decoy Chipmunks Craft

I had the chance to see the new Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip movie earlier this week with my husband and kiddos, which opens in theaters today. It was a fun movie for my 7 year old, who was falling-out-of-his-chair laughing at several points during the movie. My youngest was cranky, and not able to focus on a movie with a mature story line that included parents dating, and running away from home. But he still enjoyed several of the active scenes in the movie. The basic storyline of Alvin and the Chimpmunks: The Road Chip, includes the Chipmunks disobeying Dave to take a trip across the country. But of course, they have to trick the babysitter into thinking they’re still at home. I don’t approve of their method, and think these Decoy Chipmunks would have worked much better – and I was able to whip up all three in less than 30 minutes!

1 piece red felt
1 piece green felt

Star Wars Craft: Star Wars Flags

Yesterday, I had a chance to catch an early screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I don’t want to spoil any of the good stuff in the movie, so I’ll tell you that I really enjoyed it, and I think you will too! If you’ve been watching the trailers, surely you have a lot of questions. The movie will answer some of your questions… but leave you with more. I’m excited to see how the story continues!

If you’ve watched the trailers, you’ve seen many of the detailed sets created for the movie. One of my favorite was the hanging flags outside of Maz Kanata’s Smuggler Hangout. Lots of color and movement – and perfect decor for a Star Wars themed party or Star Wars fan’s room! And a great Star Wars Craft for a fan of any age.

Star Wars flags from Maz Kanata's Smuggler Hangout - Great for Star Wars Party Decor, or to hang in the bedroom of any Star Wars fan.

You can make these flags yourself. Each can be made in 15 minutes or less. And if you’re looking for a fun party activity, these Star Wars Flags are perfect! Prepare the flags and allow party guests to paint them themselves! A great craft and take-away from the party – each child can design their own smuggler’s flag!

To make the flags, you’ll need:
Fabric (Fat Eighth or larger)
Fabric Paints
Paintbrushes
Freezer Paper (optional – for stencils)
Dowels
Small hand saw
Assorted ribbons
Hot glue
Scissors, craft knife, or silhouette machine and silhouette file for cutting stencils
Iron & Ironing board

supplies for star wars flags

You can prep the flags by adding the dowels to the top. Cut the dowels to size with the saw.

cut dowels

Tie ribbon to both sides of the dowel.

tie ribbons on ends

Glue the dowel in place. Add another line of hot glue to fold the top flap over the dowel.

glue down flap

If you’d like to use stencils to paint the flags, start by cutting the stencils out of freezer paper. Peel up the stencil, then iron onto the fabric, shiny-side-down.

I’m using the Mandalorian symbol here, but you can pick your favorite Star Wars flags, or make up your own. Consider Jaster’s Feather, the Rebel Alliance, or even the symbol representing credits (because nothing speaks to a bounty hunter quite as much as cold hard cash).

press to fabric

Paint in the stencil. Allow paint to set, but not dry completely. Peel up the stencil.

peel off paper

You can use the inverse of the stencil as well. Here, I’m mixing two colors of paint to get a distressed look.

colors of paint to mix

mix paints

If you’d like to add more texture to your Star Wars Flags collection, you can use the extra bits of dowels to create ribbon banners. Start with a length of ribbon folded in half.

loop for ribbon

Loop the ends of the ribbon through. The ends can be uneven, to add more interest.

tuck ends in loop

Add more and more ribbon for texture.

ribbon banner

Hang your Star Wars flags and banners. If you’re lucky enough to own a castle like Maz does, you can hang them over the doorway. If not, you can hang them wherever you like to show local smugglers that they’re welcome here.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on Friday. Enjoy, and may the force be with you!
