Simple Dangling Beaded Earrings

Beaded Earrings

This weekend I made some jewelry, including these simple dangling earrings. I just love them, don’t you? When I make earrings, I usually reach for earring wires instead of posts, but I thought it would be fun to make some earrings that use a post – but they still have a nice dangle! These beaded earrings were super inexpensive to make, I’ll show you how!

To make your Simple Dangling Beaded Earrings, you need:

Darice Silver Jewelry Findings Set (you need the stud posts, 2 jump rings and 4 head pins from this set)
Darice Bead set (blue) – (you need two large beads and some of the small beads from this set)
Krazy Glue
Jewelry pliers

supplies for beaded earrings

Start your beaded earrings by threading the large bead onto a head pin. Using round-nosed pliers, create a wrapped loop at the bottom.

create loop

Repeat with the second bead. Then do the same for the dangles – make 2 long dangles with wrapped loops at the top.

make dangles

Attach the top to the bottom using a jump ring.

attach top to bottom

Then attach the top to the post using Krazy Glue.

add glue

Set aside for a few minutes to let the glue set. I tucked the post into a folded piece of fabric.

set aside to dry

That’s it! Your earrings are done!

dangle stud earrings

Creating wrapped loops is a little tricky, it might take you a couple tries. If you mess up, just cut off the loop and start over – head pins are cheap, no need to cry over them! Just toss the icky one and move on.  With a little practice, you’ll have a fun and simple pair of dangling beaded earrings!

Guardians of the Galaxy Craft – Free Mix Tape Printable

Guardians of the Galaxy Printable Mix Tape Box

Earlier this week, hubby and I had a chance to see a pre-screening of the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy”. I’ll admit that I was completely unfamiliar with everything about the movie when I sat down in the movie theater. I figured that even if the movie ended up being awful, we’d still have a night out together – and every couple needs a date night every now and then. Fortunately for us, the movie was awesome. Lots of action, humor, and even a little romance.

In the movie, Peter Quill is an adventurous outlaw. He connects with a group of misfits to create an unlikely team. The entire story is told with lots of humor (some of it fairly crude – but still very funny), and an awesome sound track, courtesy of Peter’s mom. When he was a boy, Peter’s mom created a mix tape for him, and he treasures it. I remember the mix tapes of my youth, and thought it would be fun to create a little box you can print out and put together to hold your own special little treasures. This is a fun Guardians of the Galaxy craft, a simple and fun favor idea for a Guardians of the Galaxy party, or just a neat little bit of nostalgia.

All you need to make your own little mix tape box is:

Free Mix Tape Cassette Box Printable
Cardstock
Scissors
Ball Point Pen
Ruler
Tape

Start by printing out the cassette box printable onto cardstock, and cutting it out.

cut out the printable

Turn it over, and score all the fold lines. An easy way to do this is with a ballpoint pen and a ruler. Just press hard with the pen as you make the lines. This will score the paper, making it easy to get crisp fold lines.

score inside of box

Fold, and tape the four corners. Such a simple Guardians of the Galaxy craft!

It is so easy to make your own Awesome Mix Vol. 1 Cassette Box! Now all you need is to stash a few treats inside… and to go see Guardians of the Galaxy – it opens in theaters today!

Cutting an Air Rocket with your Silhouette

Air Rocket Cut with Silhouette

Earlier this month, we went on a giant 2-week road trip, which included a visit with my Aunt, Uncle, and 2 cousins. My cousins are 8 and 10, and my 5 year old absolutely loves visiting them. It was his one request this summer.

I love hanging out with them as well. They are fun, creative kids. I brought some craft supplies along to play with, including my Silhouette (doesn’t everyone take their Silhouette on vacation?)

I have the Designer Edition of the Silhouette software, and LOVE getting to create all of my own designs. Which is exactly what we did. My cousins showed me the air rockets that they made themselves, using this compressed air rocket template over on Make.com. The template was a PDF, that I was able to convert into a Silhouette file for making compressed air rockets, and we were able to cut our rocket pieces in no time! I was able to perforate the folds, which my cousins said made the folding process much easier.

Cutting the Air Rocket with a Silhouette

Once we had our pieces cut out of scrapbook cardstock, we made our rockets on the rocket stands they already had there – a pipe attached to a piece of wood, which helps form the body.

on the rocket stand

The rockets were covered in Duck tape, making them air tight.

cover with patterned Duck Tape

My Aunt was a little disappointed with how fast they came together – she says that having the boys cut the pieces for their rockets eats up a significant part of the afternoon! But the boys loved being able to whip up their rockets. Once they were done, all that was left was to shoot them off!

shooting off air rockets

If you’d like to make your own compressed air rockets, you can find the basic information on making compressed air rockets over at Make, and you can grab the compressed air rocket cut file for your Silhouette here.

Don’t own a Silhouette yet? This is the perfect chance to grab one! Right now, through the end of July, Silhouette is offering great deals on the Cameo and the Portrait. And if you have a Silhouette, but not the Designer Edition Software, it is worth the upgrade – especially since right now Designer Edition it is 40% off with promo code “MINUTE”!

Be sure to stop back tomorrow, our last day for Craft Lightning Craft Camp… we have lots more fun crafts to show you!

Pony Bead Bracelet

Digging into a bucket of pony beads always reminds me of summer camp. So when we decided to dedicate this Craft Lightning week to Camp Crafts, and create camp-inspired crafts that can be made in 15 minutes or less, I knew I would be whipping up a simple pony bead bracelet. This one is easy to make, and includes knot-tying, which is another camp staple!

Pony Bead Bracelet

To make this bracelet, you only need 2 supplies: cord and pony beads.

supplies for pony bead bracelet

Start by cutting about a yard of cord, folding it in half, and tying a knot in the folded end.

tie knot in middle

Add a single bead on both strands of the cord.

add first bead

Then add a bead on each side.

add 2 beads

Now add another single bead, on both strands, and tie a knot to secure.

tie knot

Repeat the process, adding two beads, then one, then a knot. Two beads, one, knot. over and over until your bracelet is the right length. Then fold the rest of the cording over to tie a BIG knot.

tie knot at end

Cut the excess cord, and tuck the knot into your loop from the beginning to close the bracelet.

Be sure to come back tomorrow for more fast and fun camp craft ideas! I’ll be sharing them all week long!

Camp Style Tie Dye Stained Glass

Yesterday, as part of our Craft Lightning Craft Camp, I shared with you simple and easy less-mess tie dye. Because I loved dying shirts at camp. Today I wanted to bring dye into another part of craft camping… because most of the craft huts I’ve seen at camps only have a limited amount of supplies, it helps to be able to use the same supplies in multiple ways – and Rit dye is one of the most versatile supplies out there. It made shirts yesterday, and stained glass today!

camp style stained glass

Craft Lighting is a semi-monthly series where Angie from the Country Chic Cottage and I, along with our blogging friends, make fast (15 minute or less) projects on the same theme. This week, the theme is Camp Crafts – and we’re having so much fun with this. In case you missed them, go check out the Day 1 Camp Craft Roundup and Day 2 Camp Craft Roundup.

This camp-style tie dye stained glass is super easy to make. You only need a few supplies
Elmer’s School Glue
Rit Dye
Wooden skewers
Popsicle Sticks
Plastic Sandwich Bags
Hot Glue

Start by making the glue dye. You need school glue that is about 3/4 of the way full – then add your dye.

dye into glue

Use a wooden skewer to stir your glue dye.

mix dye glue

Make as many colors as you would like.

dye glue

Put your glue dye aside, and make your “glass” frames. Start by cutting your bag. You can make two frames from each bag.

trim plastic bag

Hot glue the popsicle sticks in place. I did two vertical pieces first, with a horizontal piece (not glued) behind to measure the distance apart.

make popsicle stick frame

Add the horizontal sticks with hot glue as well, then trim off the extra plastic.

trim off plastic

Now create your designs with the dye glue! You’ll want to use a very THIN layer of dye glue.

create thin layer of dye glue

To create a fun tie dye look, add thin stripes of color.

thin layers of dye glue

Then use a toothpick or skewer to swirl the colors together.

swirl the colors

You can leave the gaps to allow more light through, or close the gaps by spreading the dye glue with the toothpick.

use toothpick to spread dye glue

Once you’ve created your designs, allow them to dry.

Place your tie dye stained glass in a bright window to catch the light!

Then make sure to come back tonight for a round up of more fun and fast camp craft ideas!

Harry Potter Time Turner Necklace

Are you nuts about Harry Potter? I’ve read the books twice (working on a third time – this time to my son), and love to watch the movies late at night, especially while doing some late night crafting. I love all of the wonderful wizarding world happenings in the movies – traveling by flu powder, a magical hat that knows where you’ll be successful, and books that are also monsters. When I was asked to take part in Marissa from Rae Gun Ramblings’ Harry Potter series, I wasn’t sure what kind of project to come up with! So many different possibilities… but in the end I decided to make a Time Turner Inspired Necklace.

Harry Potter Time Turner Inspired Necklace

Hermione reminds me so much of myself as a kid – kind of awkward, messy hair, and bossy. But with an awesome gang of friends. She also takes on a lot – including a double course load… assisted with the help of her time turner necklace. There are lots of times when I could use one of those! So, although this one doesn’t have any magical time-altering powers, I still love it. If you want to make your own time-turner necklace, here is how you do it…

Start with these supplies:
Crystal beads to make the hourglass
Hoops in 3 sizes for the body of the necklace
Jump Rings
Jewelry Wire (this is 28 gauge)
Jewelry pliers

supplies for time turner necklace

Start by adding the wire to one of the smallest hoops.

wrap wire on small ring

Then make the hourglass by adding the beads. Wrap the wire on the opposite side of the hoop to secure.

thread through second bead

Thread the wire back through the bead to the center.

add second bead

Twist the wire together in the center, and wrap around, to complete the hourglass look, wrapping the wire around the center to secure before clipping the wire.

twist wire for hourglass

Now that the hourglass is complete, add another small circle. Carefully open it like a jump ring, and loop it through the center circle, holding the hourglass, then close.

add second small ring

Wire the second hoop in place by cutting a 8″ length of wire for each side, and secure the spot where the small hoops meet on each side, leaving the wire tails in place. Use these wire tails to add a larger hoop. Then open up another hoop, and add it to the time turner.

add middle hoops

Secure this hoop in place using the same wire tails, then clip the extra wire.

twist wire on middle hoops

Use a jump ring to add the final, largest hoop. You can use a jump ring to secure the last layer of rings as well, if needed.

add outer hoop

Add a jump ring to the top, and string on a necklace. Your time-turner is complete! Though you can’t go back to this morning to get twice as much out of your day, this craft didn’t take that long, so you still have plenty of time to create lots more today!
