Simple DIY Thing 1 and Thing 2 Hair

When I think Seuss, I always think of The Cat in the Hat. Probably the first Seuss book I was introduced to, and still a favorite. I came up with a super simple way to replicate the hair for Thing 1 and Thing 2, so that you can make a simple DIY Thing 1 Costume (or Thing 2 costume). I’m absolutely in love with how this DIY Thing 1 and Thing 2 hair turned out!

I made this project as part of a special Craft Lightning series. This week, Angie from The Country Chic Cottage, Sarah from Mom Endeavors, and I are whipping up fast Seuss-inspired crafts that take 15 minutes or less. And, we’ve invited a bunch of our friends to join in! Be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this post to check out their Seussian crafts.

Easy DIY Thing 1 and Thing 2 Hair from Dr Seuss Cat in the Hat

I’ve made a video that shows you how the hair is made, watch the video below, or scroll down for a photo step-by-step.

You’ll need:
Felt Hat
1.5 Blue feather boas per hat
Hot Glue
Scissors

supplies for thing 1 thing 2 hair

Start by pulling the ears, eyes, and nose from the felt hat. I just pulled them off.

remove pieces

Using the hot glue, glue the boa in a spiral around the hat, starting at the base.

glue in a spiral

Keep gluing, until you’ve run out of boa. Add the second boa, keep going around until you reach the top. Cut the excess, then glue down the end. Find a red shirt for a super simple costume to go with your DIY Thing 1 and Thing 2 Hair! If you like, make a Duck Tape Cat in the Hat hat for a friend to wear!

Lorax Mustache Quote Necklace

Dr. Seuss, and The Lorax are some favorite childhood memories for many of us. Our own childhood, reading to our children, or both. I thought it would be fun to make a quick and simple Lorax necklace, using one of my favorite quotes from the Lorax book… and there are so many great ones to choose from!

All week long I’ll be sharing fun and fast Seuss-inspired crafts as part of Craft Lightning Week. My friends Angie from The Country Chic Cottage, and Sarah from Mom Endeavors are co-hosting with me. Each day we’re sharing a fun fast craft of our own… as well as sharing Seuss inspired crafts from our friends across the web. Make sure you scroll to the end of the post to see all the other fun ideas!

Lorax quote Necklace

To make the necklace you’ll need:
Mustache Necklace pendant
Necklace Chain
Jump Rings
Yellow Embroidery Floss
Fabric Fuse Glue
Printed Quote (get it here)
Pendant for quote
Mod Podge
Paintbrush
Jewelry Pliers

supplies for lorax necklace

Start by covering the mustache pendant with the Fabric Fuse. Cut lengths of embroidery floss, and line them up on the pendant. I used the end of a pin to push them right up against each other.

start adding threads

glue down threads

Cover the whole pendant.

finished Mustache

Use a jump ring to attach the pendant to the chain. Coat with Mod Podge to keep all the fibers in place.

add layer of Mod Podge

You could leave the necklace like this, but I like it with the quote. Cut out the printable, glue it into the pendant, and add the acrylic cover.

Duck Tape Roses

I’m super excited to share these simple Duck Tape roses with you! I designed these to be simple to make, no templates, no circles of different sizes – just a rose that looks pretty cool, no matter how wonky you cut. This is a great craft for tweens and older, though a crafty eight year old could surly rock a duck tape rose.

Duck Tape Roses

I taught crafters of all kinds how to make this Duck Tape Rose at the Crafts and Hobby Association Trade Show this past weekend. It was such a blast teaching other crafters how to make beautiful roses using their favorite tape!

Let’s get on with the Duck Tape Rose tutorial, shall we?

You’ll need:

Duck Tape – any color or colors… or patterns!
Green Duck Tape
Scissors – I HIGHLY recommend the Fiskars Duck Tape Scissors
Floral Wire

Start with a strip of Duck Tape.

cut strip of tape

Fold it in half, sticky sides together, so you have a shorter strip that is still as wide as it was when it came off the roll. Cut it into circle-ish shapes. Don’t worry about perfection – a little oval or wonky is fine. You’ll need at least 8 circles – more if you want a bigger rose.

cut circles

Pick your least favorite of all the circles, and fold it in half. Cut two small slits on the fold, then unfold. The slits will look like little buttonholes. Fold your floral wire in half, inserting one end into each of the slits.

cut slits into circle

Fold the circle back in half, and then into thirds. Crease well.

fold into thirds

Cut small Duck Tape squares, half the width of the Duck Tape. Set aside for use in the next step.

squares of tape

Select the next circle. Create a pleat (or pucker) in the circle, and add the tape to the convex side (what will be the outside), at the pleat.

create a pleat

Place the stem on top, then wrap the tape around.

add petal

Add two more petals to make the inside row, then four petals around that.

keep adding petals

You can add more rows if you like, to make a larger rose. Just stagger the petals as best you can on each subsequent row.

Bend out the tips of the petals if you want to open up the rose.

open up petals

Wrap the stem with some green Duck Tape, and your rose is complete! Make more to give to your special someone!

Terial Magic Folded Box

Earlier this week, I shared my product review of Terial Magic over on the Craft Test Dummies Blog. As part of that review, I made some fun projects using Terial Magic, including this fun little fabric box! If you’d like to make one, here are the instructions.

Fabric Box

You’ll need:

Fabric
Terial Magic
Rotary Cutter and Ruler
Scissors

Start by preparing your fabric with the Terial Magic. Then cut your squares. You’ll need the square for the bottom of the box to be 1/4″ smaller than the top. I made a mini box, and used squares that were 5″ and 4.75″.

cut square

We’re going to start with some folds that will help orient us. Fold into a triangle, press to get a good crease, unfold, and re-fold into a triangle the other direction. This will make a creased X on the square.

fold into triangle

Fold the four corners in to the center.

fold in corners

Make some more fold for registration: fold the two sides in to the center, crease. Unfold, and repeat the other direction. Unfold.

fold sides in to center

Using scissors, cut in each corner towards the center, stopping where the folds from the last step cross.

clip in corners

Unfold two opposing sides, fold in the flaps.

fold in flaps

Fold these back in place, then tuck the flaps on the remaining sides in. Your box is complete. Repeat with the other square to have a box with both a top and bottom.

Simple DIY Glass Tiled Tray

This glass tiled tray is super simple to make, and it was inspired by my friend Shannon from Madigan Made and her tiled glass table. I loved hers, and wanted a simpler version… and not on a table. So I made this quick tiled glass tray.

Simple Glass Tiled Tray

You’ll need:
White Tray
Glass stones
Resin (Shannon used Envirotex, which I couldn’t find, but I have used it in the past, and I think it works better)
Mixing container and stir stick
Masking tape

supplies for glass tiled tray

If your tray isn’t tightly sealed, use masking tape around the bottom to prevent the resin from leaking through. Spread out the glass stones.

stones on tray

Mix up the resin as instructed on the package.

stir up resin

To protect the tray while the resin sets, I put my tray in a cardboard box, lined with a plastic garbage bag (just in case). Then I poured the resin on top.

allow to sit

Allow the resin to cure, as instructed on the package, and you have a fun serving tray!

Super Quick Lego Ring

Last year, I shared my DIY Lego Earrings, at that time I also whipped up a coordinating ring, but didn’t share it here… it is so simple to make, I thought it would make a great January craft!

Simple DIY Lego Ring

This ring is super easy to make!

You need a Lego brick, a ring blank, and some Krazy Glue.

supplies for lego ring

Put glue on the ring blank, then put the Lego brick on top.

You can set it aside, upside down, to dry.

Such a fun ring to wear!

Mini Mosaic Box

I’m always looking for projects to make with leftover resin after I make jewelry. This little resin box is simple to make, and works best with the last of the resin that has been sitting out for 15-30 minutes.

make a little tiled glitter box

You’ll need:
2 oz mixed resin
Glitter
Sticky-back mini tiles
Wooden Box
Popsicle Stick

supplies for tiled glitter box

Mix the glitter with the resin. Make it really sparkly, or just a little sparkly.

stir glitter into resin

Remove tiles to make the sticky-back tile sheet the right size for the top of the box, then peel off the paper and stick to the top of the box.

stick tiles to box

Using a popsicle stick, apply the glitter resin, then scrape into place.

pour on resin

If you have extra resin, you can use a paintbrush to brush it around the sides. Use a brush you’re not attached to – throwing it out is easier than trying to get the resin glitter out of the bristles. If you do this, put a piece of paper between the lid and the box so that you don’t accidentally seal the box shut.

make a tiled box

You can add some of the extra tiles to the front, if you like. Allow the resin to set for 24 hours, and your box is ready to use!

Simple Sparkle Placecards

When Yahoo asked me to share their 11 fun glitter crafts, I was a little wary. Because although I love looking at glitter (it is so SPARKLY!), crafting with it can make me crazy. Glitter gets everywhere! But they have some awesomely creative glitter ideas that you just have to check out. And I came up with a fun, quick and easy simple glitter placecard that you can make… that goes right along with the glittery goodness that’s being shared over on Yahoo!

Let’s get started!

Simple Sparkle Placecards

To make this placecard, you’ll need construction paper and glitter paper. And some kind of cutting system. I used my Silhouette. You could use whatever cutting system you have, or a craft knife if you’re really patient…

Start by making a square, about 3″x3″ in your software.

make square

Draw a horizontal line through the middle.

group piecesUsing the eraser tool, turn the center line into a dotted line.

make dotted line

Then start adding the names into the bottom half of each box. I used a fun font – you can use whichever font suits the mood of your party.

insert names

Once you have all your placecards set up, let the machine do the cutting. While the machine cuts out your cards, cut the glitter paper into the pieces you’ll need. You’ll need one piece a little smaller than 1.5″x3″ for each placecard.

cut papers

Glue the glitter paper to the back of each name, so that the glitter shows through to the front.

glue on glitter paper

You’ll need to glue in the centers of letters like o,e,a, and b.

glue down centers

Fold along the dotted line, and your glittery placecards are complete!

DIY No Slip Socks

When I take my son to indoor playgrounds, where the rules are no shoes, socks only, he has a blast. He runs around, climbs, slides, and has a great time. But when he runs from the padded carpet onto the smooth tile, sometimes, he slips. Small feet don’t have a lot of traction, and with slippery socks on, they have even less. Trying to find no-slip socks in his size wasn’t a hunt I was up for, so I decided on a super simple DIY  instead.

DIY No slip socks

You can use supplies you already have on hand – socks and hot glue. And a little bit of scrap paper.

supplies for DIY no slip socks

Start by filling the sock with crumpled paper. Stretch out the sock to the size it will be on the foot.

fill with scrap paper

Use the bot glue gun to make small circles on the sock. I didn’t want big bumps, which might be uncomfortable on hard surfaces. I also made sure the glue went into the fibers of the sock, so they won’t pull off in the wash or at play.

glue dots to bottom of sock

Cover the entire bottom of the sock. Then repeat with the other.

make dots all over the bottom

Quick and easy – no slip socks!

finished no slip socks

Christmas Tree Box

Looking for a fun and easy way to wrap a simple gift this holiday? This little Christmas Tree box is so easy to make, and a fun craft to make with the kids!

Christmas Tree Gift Box

You’ll need a Christmas=tree shaped box, green paint, paintbrush, hot glue, and a mini light string. These are not LED lights – they don’t light up at all, they just look like Christmas lights.

supplies for box

Start by painting the box pieces. Paint them separately, so you don’t accidentally seal the box shut with paint. Make sure to get all the sides and edges. Allow to dry.

paint tree

allow to dry

Cut the mini light string into sections, and hot glue in place across the lid.

That’s it! Super simple!
