Sequin baby's breath tutorial

I am so super excited to share this sequin baby’s breath with you! Such a great way to add a little sparkle to any bouquet! You can add some DIY baby’s breath to silk flowers, fresh flowers, or to a craft flower bouquet like I did! They would be great to add to a bridal bouquet, or to a corsage or boutonniere. You could make some small sprays of sequin baby’s breath and tuck them into a fancy hairdo to add some sparkle. So many ways that you can use this sequin baby’s breath – and it is super easy to make! Let’s get started, shall we?

supplies for sequin baby's breathYou’ll need:
sequins (I used an assortment of iridescent and white in two sizes)
Thin gauge floral wire
Heavy gauge floral wire stem (optional)

Start with a LONG piece of floral wire. A yard or so is a good start (about the length of your arm). Fold in half, then add a sequin on one end, and push it to the fold. Start twisting it in place. You can twist about an inch or so.

twist on one sequin

Keep adding more sequins and twisting. It looks more organic if you allow branches to come off of the stem, and add a few smaller stems off of it.

adding sequins to the baby's breath

If you’re using two different sized sequins, you can add more than one sequin at a time.

Just keep adding and twisting. Your fingers might get sore from twisting the wire… be sure not to tackle to many at once!

twist wire at each set

When you’ve finished the spray, just twist the rest of the wire together to make the stem. You’ve made your own DIY baby’s breath! Simple, right?

twist wire when complete

If you want your baby’s breath to stand up in a vase, twist the stem around some heavy gauge floral wire to give it extra support.

Keep making more sequin baby’s breath until your fingers tell you to stop! Such a fun project to do in front of the TV, or just to relax.

Sculpey Clay Flower

simple sculpey flower tutorial

I am not a clay expert. It is a medium I’d like to play with more to get better at it. There are lots of people who make amazing clay creations, and while I don’t know if I’ll ever be fantastic at it, I do love playing with it, and that’s what crafting is really about, right? I made this simple clay flower, and thought I’d share how easy it is to make. Seriously – if I can make this Sculpey clay flower, anyone can!

sculpey clay for flowerTo make the flower you need:
Green Floral Wire
Premo! Accents Pearl Assortment
Glass pan for oven (that you will no longer use for food)
Knife

I started with a large chunk of the pink, and a smaller chunk of the white. I kneaded them individually until soft, then formed them together. I wanted the white around one side of the pink.

two colors of sculpey clay

I rolled the two together into one tube, then sliced into pieces.

slice clay

I formed one end bit into a ball for the center, and the rest into petal shapes.

make ball and petal

I started adding the petals around the ball.

add petal to center

For the outer petals, I added a pleat to give the petal more dimension, and make the base smaller to attach to the center.

make a pleat in the petal

For the leaves, I kneaded the green until soft, then formed into a ball with points on two ends.

make shape for leaf

I used my fingers to press it flat and stretch it out into a leaf shape. I made two leaves.

create leaf from sculpey

I added two sets of holes to the base of the flower, and a hole to each leaf to add the stem after baking.

flower and leaf

I baked according to the directions, then allowed to cool.

I strung the stem through the base of the flower and the leaves.

put flower on wire

I decided to wrap it all with floral tape to give it a cleaner look, but that is up to you.

RIT Dyed floral stems tutorial

I love playing with dye – it is a fun way to add some color to just about anything. Dying wood is lots of fun, and super simple to do! I made these dyed floral stems using Rit dye. When I dyed the wooden hearts for these floral stems, I also made hearts for my Heart Necklace and St. Patty’s Day Necklace. So easy to dye a lot at once, and make a lot of projects!

To make these simple floral stems, that add both height and color to any flower bouquet, you need:

supplies for dyed floral stemsRit Dye
Small containers (I used the plastic containers lunchmeat comes in)
Wooden Hearts
Green Floral Wire
Thin Green Floral Wire
Drill with small drill bit

Start by adding a cup of boiling water and about 2 tablespoons of dye to the container. Add the wooden hearts and allow to sit for 30 minutes.

wood in dye

Pull out and allow to dry. I like to use paper towels covered in plastic wrap, with small holes poked in the plastic to allow for drainage.

let hearts dry

Drill small holes into the hearts, right at the top of the heart. String the thin floral wire through the hole of one heart, and begin wrapping around the stem.

wrap around stem

Keep adding hearts and wrapping them around the stem.

put leaves on stem

When you feel you have enough hearts, just wrap the rest of the wire down the stem, and secure into place by wrapping in place and tucking the end. You can add a dab of hot glue if you like.

You can make as many as you like, and in different colors!

Simple Phoomph Tassel Flower Tutorial on 30 Minute Crafts

Do you ever think up a project, and then make the project, and the finished piece is even better than what you had in your head? That’s exactly what happened with this Phoomph Flower. I am so, over-the-moon thrilled with how this flower came out! If you’ve never used Phoomph before, it adds support to fabric so that you can use regular woven fabrics like felt. And the tassel on this project gives it extra dimension. I don’t know what flower this Phoomph flower looks most like… maybe something exotic? But I can tell you that if I was a bee, I would be super excited about landing on this fun flower!

supplies for phoomph tassel flowerTo make a Phoomph Flower, you need:
Floral Fabric
Phoomph
Scissors
Green Floral Wire
Tassels for Jewelry Making
Green Floral Wire

Start by picking flowers on your fabric. Remove the paper from the Phoomph to expose the adhesive on one side, and secure to the back of the fabric. Roughly cut out the flowers. Don’t worry about perfection – that comes later.

cut out flowers

Find similar sized flowers on the fabric. Remove the adhesive on the other side of the Phoomph, and doing the best you can to line up the flowers, attach the cut out flower to the back of the fabric to make a double-sided flower.

stick to another flower

Carefully cut out around the petals, as best you can. Fold the flower in half, and cut a small slit into the center of the flower. Open and fold the other direction, cutting a second slit to make an X in the center of the flower.

cut cross in center for tassel

Insert the tassel into the X in the center. Secure with glue if needed.

push tassel into center

Attach the floral wire to the loop at the base of the tassel to make the stem.  Twist to secure. Cover in floral tape if desired.

twist on floral stem

It is that easy! Super simple flowers with a little tassel whimsy!

Mod Podge Podgeable Shapes flower on 30 Minute Crafts - Copy

You really can make crafty flowers out of anything! I created over a dozen flowers using craft supplies, and this Mod Podge flower was one of my most surprising results. I really love how it turned out! I used Podgeable papers to make my Mod Podge Flower, but you could add photos of your children, or small drawings your children have done to make this more special. With custom touches, it would make a great Mother’s Day gift!!

Mod Podge Podgeable Shapes
Mod Podge, Matte Finish
Foam Brush
Mod Podgeable Papers
Green Floral Wire
Scissors
Pen or pencil
Hot Glue

Pick out your podgeable shapes, and the paper you’ll be using. Not all the petals have to be the same size – mine aren’t! One should have a hole for hanging on one end.

Trace the shapes onto the paper.

Cut out each shape just inside the line.

Add a thin layer of Mod Podge to each Podgeable shape. Place the paper on, design side DOWN. Then add another coat of Mod Podge.

Once dry, lay out all your petals, paper side down. Attach a wire stem to the petal with the hole.

Simple Pom Pom Flower Tutorial

Pom pom flowers are super simple to make. Just yarn and your floral wire stem, and you have a fun and fluffy flower! Depending on the color you use, you could say that you made a pom pom Dandelion (out of white yarn), or a pom pom mum. I used this method to make a clover from Dr. Seuss’s book Horton Hears a Who. These pom pom flowers are easy enough to make with children.

pom pom flower suppliesHere’s what you need to get started:
Pom Pom Maker (the non-circle pom pom makers work best. Look for a stick that uses pegs)
Lion Brand Yarn
Scissors
Green Floral Wire

You can use a solid color yarn, but I like using a variegated yarn (where the color changes along the strand). I think it adds some interest. I love the pops of pink in this yarn!

Start by setting up your pom pom maker, and wrapping the yarn. I went with about 40 wraps, you can do more or less depending on how full you want your pom pom flower. Wrap the wire stem around the middle, and twist securely into place. You want that wire stem TIGHT.

wrap stem around yarn center

Pull the pegs out to release the pom pom, then cut the loops. You can trim any strands that are longer to get a smoother look to your pom pom.

cut loops and trim

That’s it! Make as many pom pom flowers as you like! You’ll find they are addictive!

Start by tearing off a long strip of Duck tape. The longer the tape, the fuller and wider your flower will be. 2-3 feet is a good length.

Keep cutting the whole length into a narrow fringe.

Cut tab on end

Put the floral stem on the adhesive, at the non-tab end. Then start rolling up, tightly.
